Mariah Carey was ‘mortified’ by New Year’s Eve flub

Mariah Carey is convinced late TV personality Dick Clark would have been as “mortified” as she was by the technical mishaps which derailed her live New Year’s Eve performance.

The superstar was among the performers booked to appear live in New York’s Times Square for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest broadcast, but she stumbled through her three-song set on Saturday night (31Dec16) after struggling to hear her backing tape.

Mariah eventually gave up singing altogether and spent the rest of her stage time just grooving with her backing dancers.

Her aides subsequently accused show producers of orchestrating the sound issues to create “a viral moment”, prompting a furious response from Dick Clark Productions officials.

On Monday (02Jan17), her manager Stella Bulochnikov addressed the controversy via EW.com, dismissing reports suggesting Carey didn’t bother to soundcheck before the performance, and laying blame for the drama at the feet of sound engineers and stage managers who assured the star her broken microphone pack would work.

Now Mariah, who initially posted “s**t happens” on social media shortly after the troubled gig, has reflected on the live flub, insisting the creator of the Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special would never have let a musician struggle like she did on air.

“All I can say is Dick Clark was an incredible person and I was lucky enough to work with him when I first started in the music business,” she told EW.com. “I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time.”

The embarrassing incident has made the Hero hitmaker rethink her staffing plans for future live telecasts.

She declared, “It’s not going to stop me from doing a live event in the future. But it will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team.

And Mariah is thankful to have the continued support of her loyal fans after her festive season ended on a sour note.

The singer added, “My true fans have been so supportive and I am so appreciative of them and everybody in the media that came out to support me after the fact, because it really was an incredible holiday season that turned into a horrible New Year’s Eve.”

Veteran entertainer Marie Osmond watched Mariah’s New Year’s Eve performance and has offered the singer a few words of support, stating, “I think people enjoy seeing people have problems, which is kinda sad… High five to her for not walking offstage.

“When you can’t hear, you can’t hear! I don’t care what people think you can hear, you don’t know what to sing to, you don’t know what pitch to sing in… She was in a really bad predicament. I think she gave it her best shot… and she’s gotten a lot of publicity from it, so, awesome!”

Mariah Carey’s manager: ‘We were told broken microphone pack would work onstage’

Mariah Carey’s manager has spoken out about the singer’s embarrassing New Year’s Eve (31Dec16) performance in New York, insisting she was told a broken microphone pack would work when she went live.

The superstar was caught stumbling through her three-song set when she couldn’t hear her backing tape and at one point gave up on singing altogether and just grooved with her backing dancers.

Mariah’s aides have since accused Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest producers of orchestrating the sound issues to create “a viral moment”, prompting a furious response from Dick Clark Productions officials.

Now her manager Stella Bulochnikov has released a lengthy statement via EW.com dismissing reports suggesting Carey didn’t bother to soundcheck before the performance, and laying the blame for the drama at the feet of sound engineers and stage managers.

“Not only did she not ditch rehearsal, we got to Times Square at 2.30 (and) they weren’t ready for her until 3.20,” Stella writes. “We waited around for their stage manager. We had the stage from 3.20 to 3.50. She (Mariah) had a dance stand-in for the musical number. She sat on the side of the stage with her ear-pack and her in-ears (monitors) and her microphone to make sure she could do the soundcheck. The most important thing to her was the sound.

“The sound was coming in choppy. She was assured it would work by the evening.”

Then, just before she hit the stage, stage managers assured Mariah the microphone pack that was not working would be fine.

“Then things start to get chaotic,” the manager adds. “They start counting her down – four minutes, three minutes.

“Mariah: ‘I can’t hear’. Them: ‘You’re gonna hear when it goes live – two minutes!’ So, right when it goes live, she can’t hear anything. The ears are dead… So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence. Once she pulled them off her ear she was hoping to hear her music, but because of the circumstances… all she hears is chaos. She can’t hear her music. It’s a madhouse. At the point, there’s no way to recover.”

Stella called TV boss Mark Shimmel to find out what had gone wrong after the show and he confirmed her in-ear monitors didn’t work, asking, “Couldn’t she just wing it?” “I’m like, ‘What? Are you talking about winging it? Are you on glue?'” the manager says.

She then insisted Shimmel cut the telecast of the performance which would air on America’s West coast three hours later, but he refused.

“I’m like, ‘You would prefer to air a show with technical glitches so you can have a viral moment rather than protect the integrity of your show and Dick Clark Productions?’ He said, ‘We just won’t do it. Do you want to do a joint statement?’ And I said, ‘No, I want you to go f**k yourself’.”

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve producers blast Mariah Carey sabotage claims

A representative for Dick Clark Productions has blasted claims they sabotaged Mariah Carey’s live performance on their annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show.

The Hero singer endured an embarrassing performance on the live TV show on Saturday night (31Dec16) when her earpieces failed and she couldn’t hear her backing track over the sound of the crowd in New York’s Times Square.

She lost her way as she lip-synced to her hits Emotion and We Belong Together before giving up and relying on fans’ help as she danced along to her songs. She eventually said “It just don’t get any better” and walked off stage.

TMZ reported Mariah’s team called it sabotage, with Nicole Perna, a representative for the singer telling Billboard that “production set her up to fail” and her manager Stella Bulochnikov adding producers “just want eyeballs at any expense” and were not “artist friendly”.

A rep for Dick Clark Productions (DCP), the company behind the annual show, hit back in a statement on Sunday (01Jan17). It reads, “As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that DCP… would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”

They claim an initial investigation into the technical errors found DCP had no involvement in the problems and concluded, “We want to be clear that we have the utmost respect for Ms. Carey as an artist and acknowledge her tremendous accomplishments in the industry.”

A source also told TMZ Mariah chose not to do a sound check and a body double was used for rehearsal, with eight monitors onstage to help amplify sound so she should have been able to still hear the backing track.

Mariah seemed to brush off the humiliating set on social media by writing, “S**t happens Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”
