Carrie Fisher’s sister knew Debbie Reynolds wouldn’t survive losing her daughter

Carrie Fisher’s half-sister Joely knew the actress’ mother Debbie Reynolds would not survive if she lost her only daughter.

The Star Wars icon, famed for her role in the franchise as Princess Leia, was hospitalized on 23 December (16) after suffering a heart attack onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles and died four days later, on 27 December (16).

Movie legend Debbie promptly shared a message of thanks to her fans for their “thoughts and prayers” after the 60-year-old’s passing, but the following day, the 84-year-old also died after suffering a suspected stroke.

A joint funeral is reportedly set to take place in Los Angeles on Thursday (05Jan16), when the actresses will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Carrie’s half-sisters Joely and Tricia Leigh Fisher, from singer Eddie Fisher’s third marriage to actress Connie Stevens, will be among the mourners at the private ceremony, and they have opened up about their tragic loss in a joint interview for America’s ABC News.

During the chat, which aired on Tuesday (03Jan16), Joely Fisher recalled spending Christmas (25Dec16) by Carrie’s bedside, honoring a promise the siblings had made days before the star’s hospitalization, and sitting with Debbie made her realize how fragile the veteran actress’ health was, too.

“I remember just holding her (Carrie’s) hand and just telling her that we were there, that we would make sure her daughter (Billie Lourd) was whole, which she will be,” Joely explained. “I sat with Debbie, and she said… she was praying for more time. She kept saying that she wanted more time, and I knew that if Carrie wasn’t going to survive this, that Debbie would not. You knew it.

“You could feel it in her tiny, little, beautiful body,” she continued. “You could see it in her face. She would not last without her on the planet, she wouldn’t. And she didn’t.”

Tricia went on to reveal her niece, Carrie’s daughter Billie, has managed to hold herself together fairly well throughout the double heartbreak.

Heaping praise on the Scream Queens actress’ strength, Tricia said, “Billie was handling everything. She’s an amazing, soulful, smart girl. She was obviously rattled to her core, it’s her mum, but she was handling it.”

The same can’t be said of Joely, who previously admitted she was “inconsolable” following the double loss.

“I’ve been having an out-of-body experience,” she shared of her grief. “The world lost Carrie, and Debbie of course, but (Carrie was) Princess Leia and we lost our hero. We lost our mirror.”

Tricia added, “We had the coolest big sister in the world. She was a bad a**… gun-toting princess. Who had that?”

Joely Fisher honored Christmas promise she made with late sister

Joely Fisher honored a promise she made to her late sister Carrie to spend Christmas with the Star Wars icon, but never imagined it would be by her deathbed.

In a new tribute essay written for The Hollywood Reporter, Joely reveals she and her late sister exchanged texts the evening before Carrie’s flight from London to Los Angeles, which was to be her last, and they chatted about Christmas plans and the Desperate Housewives actress’ upcoming 20th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve.

Carrie suffered a heart attack on the way back to America on 23 December (16) and never recovered. She died on 27 December (16).

“We promised we’d spend Christmas together,” Joely writes. “It’s a promise we kept, although not in a way either of us had anticipated. Throughout the holiday, I sat by her side in a hospital room filled with a cacophony of sounds made by the machines keeping her barely alive.”

She was joined by her sister’s mother, Debbie Reynolds, who was to pass away following a stroke on Wednesday (28Dec16), and now admits Carrie would find the whole double death drama amusing: “Debbie loved nothing more than the spotlight,” she adds. “And I can imagine Carrie is having a laugh right now, rolling her eyes at the kind of crazy ending that only happens in Shakespeare tragedies… and (Carrie) Fisher novels. Carrie’s mom has once again stolen the show, with the ultimate ‘twirled up’ joke.”

In her essay, Joely also recalls growing up with her half-sister, who was an idol and always made her feel “more interesting by osmosis” and admits Carrie would have appreciated her dramatic exit, adding: “She just might have wished for another couple of decades before making one.”

The actress concludes her piece by writing: “You all lost Princess Leia and Carrie Fisher; I lost my hero, my mentor, my mirror. My brother Todd has lost his sister and his mother, whom he has said will lay to rest together. There is no universe where these ladies are not due their appropriate pedestals, and both will be memorialized in separate ceremonies in coming weeks.

“My sister Tricia Leigh and I vow to be whatever our niece Billie needs us to be. We will pick up the the saber, use the force… whatever. We will honor these two magical people who have left the tribe in the way they lived, with grandeur and grace. I want them back but since I know that is not possible, I will soldier on.”

Joely has also hinted she is planning to write a book about her life with Carrie.
