Rebecca Ferguson: ‘I’ll sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration on one condition’

British singer Rebecca Ferguson has offered to perform at controversial President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration if he allows her to sing protest song Strange Fruit.

The pop star, who found fame on The X Factor U.K. in 2010, has reportedly been asked to sing at the ceremony on 20 January (17) and she insists she is willing to hit the stage in Washington, D.C. if she can perform Billie Holiday’s 1939 song, about racism in the 1930s.

“I’ve been asked and this is my answer,” she writes on Twitter. “If you allow me to sing ‘strange fruit’ a song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial. A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States. A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington…”

Trump’s inauguration officials have failed to secure any really big names for the swearing-in ceremony so far. Jackie Evancho from America’s Got Talent is slated to sing the National Anthem, while The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Marine Corps band, and The Rockettes are also set to perform.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir member Jan Chamberlin has resigned in protest, writing on Facebook that she couldn’t participate in the inauguration performance and “look myself in the mirror again with self-respect”.

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli reportedly volunteered to perform at the event, but a spokesperson for the Republican politician revealed it was the President-elect himself who turned down the tenor’s offer.

The chairman of Mr. Trump’s inaugural committee, Thomas J. Barrack Jr., told CNBC, “The Bocellis came to him and said, ‘Look, if it would be helpful to you, if you would like us to perform, we would consider it.’

“And Donald said: ‘You don’t need to. We’re not in that kind of a framework. Thanks very much for the offer. You’re my friend. You are always welcome at the White House.'”

Former Motley Crue singer Vince Neil also revealed he had been “uninvited” to perform at the inauguration after claiming Trump had asked him to sing.

Bruce Springsteen questions Donald Trump’s competence as U.S. leader

Bruce Springsteen fears Donald Trump hasn’t got the “mental competency” to lead America.

The Born in the U.S.A. hitmaker was an outspoken supporter of Trump’s former opponent Hillary Clinton, and when the 70-year-old property tycoon became the President-elect following a stunning victory at the polls in November (16), Springsteen was hit with an overwhelmingly negative feeling.

“I’ve felt disgust before, but never the kind of fear that you feel now,” he told WTF podcast host Marc Maron.

“It’s as simple as the fear of, is someone simply competent enough to do this particular job,” he continued. “Forget about where they are ideologically. Do they simply have the pure competence to be put in the position of such responsibility?”

While the 67-year-old doesn’t support Trump’s controversial ideology, he admits he understands why he won.

“(People have been) affected deeply by de-industrialization and globalization and the technological advances and you have been left behind, and someone comes along and says, ‘I’m gonna bring the jobs back’,” he added. “These are very powerful and simple ideas. They’re lies, they can’t occur. But if you’ve struggled for the past 30 or 40 years – and this has been the theme of much of my creative life for all those years – if someone comes along and offers you something else… it’s a compelling choice.”

But Bruce really fears that some of Trump’s controversial policy proposals, including instituting a registry for Muslims and deporting illegal immigrants, will be put in place when he takes office later this month (Jan16).

“When you let that genie out of the bottle – bigotry, racism, intolerance… – they don’t go back in the bottle that easily if they go back in at all,” he said. “Whether it’s a rise in hate crimes, people feeling they have license to speak and behave in ways that previously were considered un-American and are un-American. That’s what he’s appealing to.

“My fears are that those things find a place in ordinary, civil society.”

Sylvester Stallone angers fans by spending New Year’s Eve with President-elect Trump

Sylvester Stallone has upset many of his followers by ringing in the New Year with President-elect Donald Trump.

The movie star, who was rumored to be part of Trump’s cabinet plans at the end of 2016, celebrated with his brother Frank and America’s next leader at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and posted pictures from the bash on Instagram.

But his friendship with the controversial Republican, whose past comments about women and campaign remarks about Muslims and Latinos almost derailed his bid to become Barack Obama’s White House replacement, didn’t sit well with the Rambo star’s fans, who rebuked him for hanging out with Trump.

One wrote: “@TheSlyStallone You’re a traitor to our country for supporting that treasonous criminal sexual predator”, while another follower added: “I just lost a huge chunk of respect for the man.”

Stallone, who has since removed his Instagram post, was reportedly in discussions with Trump about taking on an arts position within the new leader’s administration, but he released a statement dismissing the reports.

Rumors linked the 70-year-old actor with the post of Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The NEA, which was established in 1965, is an independent federal agency which distributes government grants to arts organizations.

In a statement, Stallone said he was happy to be linked to the arts role, but would prefer to continue his work to help army veterans than take a government job.

He explained he was “incredibly flattered to have been suggested to be involved with the National Endowment of the Arts”, adding, “I believe I could be more effective by bringing national attention to returning military personnel in an effort to find gainful employment, suitable housing and financial assistance these heroes respectfully deserve.”

A Trump representative told Fox News, “They (Trump and Stallone) are old friends and the President-elect thinks very highly of him, but no decisions have been made regarding this position.”

Ben Affleck rules out a political future

Ben Affleck will never enter politics because he feels it has become corrupted by money.

The 44-year-old actor has a history of political activism, having campaigned and fundraised for candidates from America’s Democratic Party including presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama.

Ben’s involvement with political campaigning, as well as his outspoken appearances on U.S. current affairs shows including a regular slot on Real Time with Bill Maher, have led to speculation he may stand for election himself.

However the Gone Girl star has ruled out running for office, as he finds the huge sums of money candidates are forced to raise distasteful.

“I really wouldn’t want to (run for office),” he told The Guardian newspaper. “It’s not because I think being a public servant wouldn’t be satisfying, but it’s become a pure money-raising exercise from beginning to end. It’s small talk with people who you want to squeeze money out of. It’s sleazy. You have to have a certain tolerance to that kind of schmooze that I don’t have.”

As a Democrat, Ben is unenthusiastic about the prospect of Republican Donald Trump becoming U.S. president later this month (Jan17).

The actor also has a personal dislike of America’s President-elect, as he claims the property mogul used to strong-arm directors into giving him film cameos.

“I met him (Donald Trump) once at a Fashion Week event in Milan,” Ben revealed. “You knew you were at a cheesy party if Donald Trump was there. He would kind of trawl around them. He was famous for only granting permission for films to shoot on his real estate locations if they put him in as a cameo.”

Donald Trump will become America’s 45th president on 20 January (17).
